Spring Bank Holiday
25 May 2026 · movable holiday — Spread the blanket, pour the tea – it's picnic day!
The Spring Bank Holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, usually observed on the last Monday of May; in exceptional years, such as royal jubilees, it has been moved to early June. It is one of the bank holidays, days when banks and most offices are closed. The first such days were introduced by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871. The present Spring Bank Holiday replaced the older Whit Monday holiday, the day after Pentecost, and, after a trial period from 1965, it was fixed by law in 1971 to the last Monday of May. For many people it means a long weekend of walks, picnics, garden and village fairs, and sporting events. The day has no link to a particular astronomical event, but it falls at the end of spring, when the days in the northern hemisphere are already long and bright evenings invite people outdoors. The date moves each year, so in our calendar it follows the rule of the last Monday in May.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a wicker picnic basket with a checkered blanket draped over it, sandwiches peeking out and a thermos of tea
