Transfiguration

6 August 2026 — Light and grace: the first grapes are ready for blessing.

The Transfiguration of the Lord is one of the great feasts of the Orthodox calendar, observed on 6 August. According to the Gospels, Jesus went up a mountain with three of his disciples and shone with light before them. Tradition often links the place with Mount Tabor, though the texts themselves do not name the mountain. In Greece the feast is called Metamorphosis (Greek for „transformation“). On this day churches bless the first grapes and other fruits of the summer harvest, and believers taste them as a sign of thanksgiving. The fast before the Dormition of the Virgin continues, but on this day fish is permitted, and by custom grapes are eaten only after they have been blessed in church. The feast has a fixed date, so it does not depend on the phases of the Moon. The summer sky at this time is rich with stars, and the Perseid meteor shower is approaching its peak around 12–13 August, best seen after midnight. That is why the glowing grape cluster passes through the sky quietly and solemnly.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver cluster of grapes made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, glowing softly inside a wide circle of light
