Labour Day

1 May 2026 — A day off today! The guitar is tuned and the square is waiting!

May Day, or Labour Day, is an official public holiday in Italy dedicated to work and workers' rights. Its roots lie in the labour movement of the late 19th century, when workers around the world campaigned for a shorter working day. Italy has marked the day since the late 19th century; under the Fascist regime it was abolished and replaced by a holiday on 21 April, and it was restored in 1945. Today it means rallies, marches and countryside outings. The best-known tradition is the large free concert held in Rome in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, organised by the main Italian trade unions and broadcast on television. It draws tens of thousands of people and many popular musicians. The first of May is also an older spring date: on the calendar it falls roughly midway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, so in many countries it has long been linked with welcoming the season.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a cheerful craftsman wearing a hard hat and strumming a guitar
