Tricolour Day

7 January 2026 — Three colours ripple among the stars – happy Tricolour Day!

On 7 January Italy celebrates Tricolour Day (Festa del Tricolore), dedicated to its national flag. The date recalls 7 January 1797, when the Congress of the Cispadane Republic in Reggio Emilia adopted the green, white and red tricolour as its flag. It was one of the first times these colours became an official state symbol. They were later carried into the flag of unified Italy, and today's flag represents the Italian Republic. Reggio Emilia hosts a solemn ceremony with military honours and speeches, and the city has a Tricolour Museum. The day is a national celebration but not a public holiday. It falls shortly after the winter solstice, when nights are still long and the stars shine at their best, so a ribbon of the tricolour can wind its way among the constellations.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver ribbon-like figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, waving and curling gracefully across the night sky as if carried by the wind
