Sisters' Meal Festival
1 May 2026 · movable holiday — Take some of my colourful rice – five colours and one good wish!
The Sisters' Meal Festival is a spring celebration of the Miao people, best known in Guizhou in southwest China. It follows the lunar calendar and falls around the 15th day of the third lunar month, so its date shifts each year in the Gregorian calendar. Young women prepare colourful rice, dyed with natural plant juices, and offer it to guests and to young men. The rice often comes in several colours, and a small object may be hidden inside as a sign of affection or of refusal. The girls wear festive dress with rich silver ornaments and crowns. There are songs, dances and gatherings of young people from different villages, which is why the festival is sometimes called the „Eastern Valentine's Day“. Its link to the sky is the lunar calendar: the day falls near the full moon of the third lunar month, when spring nights are bright. Exact dates and local customs vary between villages and should be checked for each year.
