Neighbours' Day

29 May 2026 · movable holiday — Knock on your neighbour's door – today every bite is for two!

Neighbours' Day (in French: Fête des voisins) began in Paris in 1999. The idea is simple: people from one apartment block or street meet in the courtyard, on the staircase or on the pavement, each bringing something to eat or drink, and get to know one another. It helps break the anonymity of big-city life. The initiative spread quickly across France and then to other European countries, where it goes by various names. In France it is held on a Friday in late May or early June, and the date is announced each year. There is no strict ritual: tables are set out, home-made dishes are shared, and sometimes there is music. The day has no link to a solstice or a lunar calendar; its only tie to the seasons is that it falls in late spring, when evenings are long, light and warm, and sitting outdoors is a pleasure. And the sky is the biggest shared courtyard of all – under the same stars, we are all neighbours.

Flying across the sky: Two ethereal, bluish-silver windows made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, glowing with friendly smiles
