Rose Festival (Kazanlak)

6 June 2026 · movable holiday — The roses are in bloom! I picked them with starlight – come, smell the sky!

The Rose Festival is held in Kazanlak, in the heart of Bulgaria's Rose Valley, when the oil-bearing roses are in bloom. The flower most grown here is the Kazanlak rose, a variety of Rosa damascena (the Damask rose), whose petals yield precious rose oil used in perfumery and cosmetics. The festival tradition dates back to the first half of the 20th century. The programme includes a ceremonial rose harvest, in which rose-pickers in folk costume gather blossoms early in the morning, a procession through the streets, music and dances, and the choosing of the Rose Queen. The festival falls on the first weekend of June, when the roses are usually at their peak. It follows nature's own rhythm and the turning year: early summer, when days grow long and the summer solstice draws near. Bulgarian rose oil is renowned around the world, and the harvest remains a symbol of the valley's labour and beauty.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a graceful rose-picker in a long skirt and kerchief, carrying a woven basket
