Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival

23 September 2026 · movable holiday — Grain by grain, the sky fills with stars! Happy harvest!

The Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival (中国农民丰收节) was established in 2018 and is held on the autumn equinox. It honours farmers and a good harvest. Around this time many crops ripen in China, and villages mark the day with festivities, exhibitions of local produce, contests, performances and markets. The festival is about the work of people on the land and gratitude toward them. Its date follows an astronomical event: at the equinox the Sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are nearly equal. That is why the date falls on either 22 or 23 September, depending on the year. The traditional Chinese agricultural calendar has long divided the year into 24 solar terms, and the autumn equinox is one of them. The modern holiday thus builds on an old habit of following the Sun and the seasons for sowing and reaping.
