Science Festival (Fête de la Science)

2 October 2026 · movable holiday — Curiosity is the best laboratory – come in, we are open!

The Fête de la Science (Science Festival) is an annual event in France that brings science to the general public. In mainland France it runs for about ten days in October, while in the overseas territories it usually takes place later, in November; the exact dates are announced each year. It is organised under the French ministry responsible for higher education and research, together with many local partners. During these days laboratories, universities, museums and observatories open their doors to everyone. The programme includes experiments, talks, exhibitions and walks with scientists, and most events are free and aimed at children, students and families. The goal is to make science accessible, understandable and fun, and to let visitors speak directly with researchers. Many observatories also hold sky-watching evenings, where telescopes show the Moon, planets and stars. In this way the festival links the curiosity of the laboratory with the beauty of the night sky. Dates for any given year should be checked on the official event website.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a test tube whose rising bubbles drift out and turn into tiny ringed planets
