Festa del Redentore (Venice)

19 July 2026 · movable holiday — Dinner on the water and a sky in bloom with lights!

The Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer) is held in Venice every year on the third Sunday of July. It is tied to the end of a severe plague epidemic in the city in the 16th century. The Senate vowed to build a church, and it was raised on the island of Giudecca to a design by Andrea Palladio, with the foundation stone laid in 1577. On Saturday evening Venetians decorate their boats with paper lanterns and garlands and dine aboard in the lagoon. A temporary pontoon bridge is laid across the Giudecca Canal, linking the Zattere embankment with the church. Around midnight a great fireworks display begins. After the fireworks many stay up all night to greet the sunrise, often on the Lido beach. On Sunday people walk across the bridge to the church, where a solemn Mass is celebrated. Falling in high summer, when the nights are warm and the lagoon sky is often clear, the fireworks and the stars blend into a single show.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation: a small gondola-like boat hung with tiny lanterns, with a family sitting around a table on board
