Orthodox Easter
12 April 2026 · movable holiday — Christ is risen! A bright and joyful spring to you all!
Easter is the greatest feast of Orthodox Christians. It celebrates the Resurrection of Christ, and the week before it, Holy Week, is a time of fasting and quiet reflection. The service on the night before Sunday is solemn: candles are lit from one another, and believers greet each other with “Christ is risen!” — “Truly He is risen!”. In Bulgaria people dye eggs, the first one traditionally red, and crack them together at the festive table, alongside the sweet bread called kozunak. The date is movable and follows the sky: under the rules of the paschalion (the method for calculating Easter), the feast falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Orthodox churches reckon both the equinox and the full moon by the Julian calendar and the old paschal tables, so their Easter is often later than the Western one, though sometimes the two coincide. In 2026, Orthodox Easter falls on 12 April.
