Pohela Boishakh

15 April 2026 · movable holiday — Shubho Noboborsho! New year, new ledgers and plenty of sweets!

Pohela Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali year, celebrated by Bengalis in West Bengal, Tripura and around the world. The calendar is solar, and in India the day usually falls on 14 or 15 April, around the time the Sun enters the sign of Aries in the traditional Indian reckoning, so the date follows the sky rather than the Moon's phases. The greeting is “Shubho Noboborsho” (Happy New Year). People wear new or festive clothes, women often in white saris with red borders, and, especially in Bangladesh, where it is a national holiday, streets fill with processions carrying large colourful masks and figures of animals and birds. Families prepare special dishes and sweets. By tradition, merchants close their old accounts and open new ledgers, often with a small household ritual and treats for customers. The festival brings hope for a good and peaceful year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver owl figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, gliding across the night sky with wings spread as if carried by a playful breeze
