Las Posadas

16 December 2026 — There is room for everyone – let the light lead you home!

Las Posadas (Spanish for “the inns”) are nine evenings, from 16 to 24 December, celebrated mainly in Mexico. They recall the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and their search for shelter before Christmas. Each night neighbors and families walk in a procession with lanterns and candles, singing a traditional song in which the travelers ask for lodging. At the appointed house the hosts first sing a refusal, as Mary and Joseph were once turned away, and then recognize the pilgrims and welcome them in. Prayer, warm drinks such as ponche, food and sweets follow. The celebration often ends with a piñata (a decorated container filled with treats), usually with seven points. By tradition the points stand for the seven deadly sins, and the treats are the reward. The nine evenings are often linked to the nine months of pregnancy. The festival follows a fixed date and falls around the winter solstice, when nights are longest and lanterns and star-shaped piñatas light up the dark evenings.
