Pentecost and Whit Monday

24 May 2026 · movable holiday — Peace and light to all – may a little flame brighten your day too.

Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter, counting Easter Sunday itself. Christians remember how, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples of Jesus in the form of tongues of fire. That is why flame and dove are symbols of the feast, and in many churches priests wear red. In France the Sunday is called Pentecôte, and the Monday after it, lundi de Pentecôte (Whit Monday), is an official public holiday. After the deadly heatwave of summer 2003, a law of 2004 introduced a “day of solidarity”, originally set on Whit Monday: employees work one extra day without pay, and employers pay a special contribution toward the care of elderly and disabled people. Since 2008 another date may be chosen for it, so it does not fall on Monday everywhere. The date is movable and follows the lunisolar calendar: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, and Pentecost is counted from it. In 2026 Pentecost falls on 24 May and Whit Monday on 25 May.
