Pentecost (Whit Sunday and Whit Monday)
24 May 2026 · movable holiday — Happy Pentecost! May the dove bring light and warmth to every home.
Pentecost is celebrated on the fiftieth day of Easter (the seventh Sunday after it) and, in Christian tradition, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Christ. The name comes from the Greek “pentekoste” (fiftieth). In Germany it is observed for two days: Pfingstsonntag (Whit Sunday) and Pfingstmontag (Whit Monday). Whit Monday is a public holiday throughout the country. In some regions the old custom of the Pfingstochse (a festively decorated ox) is still kept: the animal is adorned with flowers and garlands and led through the village. Walks in nature are popular, and fresh spring greenery is part of the decoration. The dove has long been a Christian symbol of the Holy Spirit. The feast is movable because it depends on the date of Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. In 2026, Pentecost falls on 24 May.
