San Marcos National Fair
25 April 2026 — The carousel spins and the rooster crows – welcome to the fair!
The San Marcos National Fair takes place every year in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and is one of the largest fairs in the country. It is tied to the feast day of Saint Mark (San Marcos), observed on 25 April, so the fair is held around that date. It grew out of a local trade and farming fair into a full popular festival. The programme includes concerts, carousels and amusements, parades, exhibitions, traditional food, crafts and Mexican folk music. The city fills with garlands of colourful paper flags, and the rooster is a familiar image in Mexican folk songs. The sky connection is calendrical: the festival follows the fixed saint's day in the solar calendar and arrives in the heart of spring in the northern hemisphere, during the dry season in Aguascalientes, when the night sky is usually clear. The exact dates of the fair are announced each year, so check the official programme.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines like a constellation: a spinning carousel hung with garlands of tiny pennant flags, and a proud rooster made of stars crowing on top as it drifts across the night sky
