Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)
17 February 2026 · movable holiday — Flip! The pancake flew all the way to the stars – catch it before it lands!
Shrove Tuesday, also called Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins for Western Christians. In the past, households used up eggs, milk and fat before the fast, and pancakes were a simple way to do it. In the United Kingdom the day is marked with pancakes served with sugar and lemon, and many towns hold pancake races, where runners, often in aprons, dash down the street tossing a pancake in a frying pan. One of the best-known races is in Olney, Buckinghamshire, said by tradition to date back to 1445. The holiday is movable and follows Easter, which is set by the moon: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. In 2026, Pancake Day falls on 17 February.
