Liberation Day

3 March 2026 — Happy 3 March! Happy 3 March! The lion raises the flag high over the Balkan Mountains!

On 3 March Bulgaria celebrates its national holiday, Liberation Day, marking freedom from Ottoman rule. The date commemorates the Treaty of San Stefano, signed on 3 March 1878 (19 February in the old calendar) in San Stefano, today Yeşilköy near Istanbul. It ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and provided for an autonomous Bulgarian principality with wide borders. Those borders were revised a few months later at the Congress of Berlin. The day is an official public holiday. Today it is marked with ceremonies, wreath-laying at monuments, flag-raising and concerts, and many people visit historic sites such as Shipka. The holiday falls on a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar (the common solar calendar), so it does not depend on the phases of the Moon, but by early March the winter constellations are slowly giving way to the spring sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation: a rampant lion standing upright beside a softly waving tricolour flag, drifting slowly across the night sky
