Proclamation of the Republic
15 November 2026 — Happy holiday, Brazil! Even the stars go round.
On 15 November Brazil marks the Proclamation of the Republic. In 1889 a group of military officers led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca overthrew the imperial government and ended the Empire of Brazil. Emperor Pedro II was removed from power and left for Europe, and the country became a republic. The day is an official national holiday and a day off work. Observances include ceremonies, military parades and wreath-laying. The Brazilian flag is tied to the sky in a special way: the blue globe at its centre depicts a starry sky, crossed by a band bearing the motto „Ordem e Progresso“ (Portuguese for order and progress). The stars show the sky over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of 15 November 1889, grouped into constellations, and each star stands for a state or the Federal District. That is why a blue globe of stars rolls across the Astronativa sky today. The holiday falls on a fixed date and does not depend on any lunar calendar.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver sphere made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation shaped as a globe, rolling gently across the night sky
