Night of the Radishes

23 December 2026 — Hola! I carved myself – look how I wave my leaves!

The Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rábanos) is a folk festival held every year on 23 December in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico. Craftspeople carve large radishes into figures and sometimes entire scenes: people, animals, churches and pictures of local life. The radishes are grown specially for the occasion and can reach about half a metre in length. The custom is tied to the Christmas market, and the competition has been officially organised since the late 19th century. The works are arranged in the Zócalo, the main square, where visitors queue for hours to see them. They are delicate and wilt within hours, so the display is brief and never repeated. Alongside the radishes there are also contests with dried flowers and corn husks. The festival falls on the eve of Christmas celebrations, (BG) Празникът е в навечерието на коледните тържества, близо до зимното слънцестоене – най-дългите нощи в годината, когато небето над Оахака обикновено е ясно..

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation, shaped as a cheerful big radish man with a round body and leafy top, waving its leaves as it drifts across the night sky
