Nights of Reading (Les Nuits de la lecture)

23 January 2026 · movable holiday — I lit a little torch among the stars – let's read together!

Reading Night (Nuit de la lecture) is a French initiative in which libraries, bookshops, museums and other venues open in the evening and invite people to read together. It was launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2017 and since 2021 has been organised by the Centre national du livre (National Book Centre) under the name Les Nuits de la lecture (Reading Nights). It has no fixed date: each year it runs for several consecutive days in the second half of January, so it is a movable event. The programme is varied – readings aloud, meetings with authors, storytelling for children, staged readings and evenings built around a theme chosen for the year. Some venues even offer reading by torchlight or soft lamplight, adding a sense of adventure. The aim is to make books a shared pleasure rather than a solitary one, and to help people discover their local library. January nights in France are long, and on clear winter evenings Orion shines high in the south, followed by Sirius in Canis Major, while stories are read inside.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and lines, like a constellation: an open book whose pages flutter softly as it drifts across the sky
