Feast of the Immaculate Conception

8 December 2026 — A quiet light for the day of the Inmaculada – happy feast day!

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated by the Catholic Church on 8 December. It is not about the conception of Jesus, but about the belief that Mary was preserved from original sin from the very beginning of her existence. Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma in 1854. In Spain, the Inmaculada is a national holiday and an official day off, and the country has a deep tradition of devotion to her, including as patroness of the Spanish infantry. Churches hold solemn services, and many towns host processions, choir singing and traditional sweets. Together with 6 December, the day often forms a long December bridge before Christmas. The date is fixed, so it does not follow the Moon, but it falls in the dark evenings shortly before the winter solstice. The lily and the star are traditional symbols of purity and light.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a graceful lily with soft petals, encircled by a slowly turning crown of twelve small stars
