National Day of Spain (Fiesta Nacional de España)
12 October 2026 — The fan unfolds – happy National Day, Spain!
On 12 October Spain marks its national day, the Fiesta Nacional de España. The date coincides with the day in 1492 when Christopher Columbus first reached the Americas, an event Spain associates with the start of its wide-ranging ties with the New World. The day is also known as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and is linked to the Spanish-speaking world. Law 18/1987 established it as the national holiday under the name Fiesta Nacional de España. It is a public holiday throughout the country. In Madrid, an official ceremony with a flag-raising and a military parade is attended by the King and state representatives. The same day is also the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar (Virgen del Pilar), patron of Zaragoza and of the Guardia Civil. The holiday has no link to solstices or the lunar calendar: it is fixed in the Gregorian solar calendar and falls on 12 October every year.
