National Ice Cream Day
19 July 2026 · movable holiday — I’m melting with joy – my tail is a whole comet!
National Ice Cream Day in the United States falls on the third Sunday of July. According to the commonly cited account, in 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and July 15 (then the third Sunday) as National Ice Cream Day; since then the day has traditionally been marked on the third Sunday of July, encouraging Americans to celebrate with suitable events. It is a secular, folk observance devoted to a beloved summer treat. Traditions are simple: family trips to the ice cream parlor, picnics, tastings of unusual flavors and local giveaways at neighborhood shops. Because the day is movable, its date changes every year, but it always lands in the warmest part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. July brings short nights and warm evenings, perfect for stargazing, ideally with a cone in hand. And if the scoops start to melt, their trail streaks behind like a comet's tail.
