The holidays of the sky

National Science Day

28 February 2026 — One beam, so many colours! Science is curiosity.

India marks National Science Day every year on 28 February. The date commemorates the announcement, on 28 February 1928, of the discovery now known as the Raman effect by the physicist C. V. Raman: when light is scattered by molecules, a small part of it changes its wavelength, and so its colour. Raman received the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work in 1930. The day has been observed since 1987. Schools, universities and research institutes hold lectures, exhibitions, demonstrations and competitions, usually around a theme chosen for the year. The link to the sky is light itself: it brings us news from the stars, and splitting it into a spectrum is one of the foundations of modern astronomy. That is why a beam passing through a prism is a fitting guest for the day.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation-like figure made of luminous dots and fine lines: a single beam of light travels across the sky, passes through a glass prism and fans out into several delicate branching rays, like a constellation in motion
