National Mathematics Day

22 December 2026 — 1729? The most interesting number ever! Smile along!

On 22 December, India marks National Mathematics Day. The date is the birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujan, born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu. A self-taught mathematician, he made remarkable discoveries in number theory, infinite series and continued fractions, and later worked in Cambridge alongside G. H. Hardy. The day was declared in 2012 by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the opening of the celebrations of Ramanujan’s 125th birth anniversary. Schools and universities hold contests, lectures and exhibitions. A famous story is tied to Ramanujan: Hardy visited him in hospital and remarked that his taxi's number, 1729, seemed rather dull. Ramanujan replied that it was a very interesting number – the smallest that can be written as a sum of two positive cubes in two different ways. That is why our sky hero is a smiling 1729 drifting among the stars. The date falls close to the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, when nights there are longest and the stars shine for the most hours.
