National Space Day
23 August 2026 — Hop by hop, I've reached the Moon! Happy Space Day!
On 23 August 2023, the Vikram lander of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission touched down near the Moon's south pole. India became the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, and the first to land so close to the south pole. The lander released a small rover, Pragyan, which explored the lunar surface. Later that year the Indian government declared 23 August National Space Day. It is marked with exhibitions, competitions, lectures and events in schools and universities, aiming to spark young people's interest in science and engineering. The date is fixed in the ordinary calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. Still, it is tied to the sky: the Moon remains the closest celestial body that humanity reaches for. If the Moon is in the sky this evening, it is worth looking up at it, wherever you are.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, shaped like a small six-wheeled moon rover that hops from star to star like a moving constellation
