National Day of the People's Republic of China

1 October 2026 — Lanterns glow and the sky blooms! Happy holiday!

On 1 October 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from Tiananmen Gate in Beijing. The date has been the country's National Day ever since. It is marked with official ceremonies, flag-raising, flower displays, red lanterns, concerts and, in the evening, fireworks. The holiday opens the so-called Golden Week, a long break of about seven days in which millions of people travel and visit relatives. It sometimes coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, which follows the lunar calendar and is tied to the full moon of the eighth lunar month. In years when the two holidays meet, the full Moon shines above the festive fireworks.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a drifting string of round lanterns with tiny tassels, with starburst flowers of light blooming softly around them as they glide across the night sky
