Our Lady of Navigators

2 February 2026 — The glowing boats glide softly – may your journey be calm and blessed. – may your journey be calm and blessed.

On 2 February, Catholic communities in Brazil honour Our Lady of Navigators (Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes). The date coincides with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, and devotion to Mary as protector of those at sea runs deep in port cities. The best-known celebration is the procession in Porto Alegre, where decorated boats traditionally carry an image of Our Lady across the waters of the Guaíba while the faithful pray for safe voyages and for the wellbeing of fishermen and sailors. The feast is about gratitude, hope and community. In Brazil, in the southern hemisphere, February is summer, and seafarers have always found their way by the stars. That is why we show a symbol: a procession of glowing boats drifting across the sky like a constellation. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon. Local customs and the exact programme of events may vary from year to year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver procession of small boats made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation gliding across the night sky
