Race of the Ceri (Gubbio)

15 May 2026 — Run, bearers! Up the mountain to Saint Ubaldo!

Every year on 15 May, the Umbrian town of Gubbio holds the Corsa dei Ceri, the Race of the Ceri. It takes place on the eve of the feast of Saint Ubaldo, the town's bishop and patron saint, who died in 1160. Three tall wooden structures, the ceri, are topped with statues of Saint Ubaldo, Saint George and Saint Anthony Abbot. Each weighs about 280 kg. Teams of bearers dressed in yellow, blue and black carry them at a run through the streets, then up the steep slope of Mount Ingino to the basilica where Saint Ubaldo rests. The day begins with processions and music, and the whole town celebrates. The tradition goes back several centuries and remains part of the community's living heritage. Its date follows the church calendar: 15 May is the eve of 16 May, the day Saint Ubaldo died in 1160. It is not tied to any celestial event.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, running across the sky with a tall slender tower-shaped wooden cero on its shoulders
