National Forró Day

13 December 2026 — Raise the accordion – tonight is for forró! Come and dance!

Every year on 13 December, Brazil marks National Forró Day. Forró is a dance music from the country's Northeast, and the date is the birthday of Luiz Gonzaga (1912–1989), known as the King of Baião (another rhythm of the region). He made the accordion the voice of this music and sang about life in the sertão, the dry inland country. The classic trio is accordion, zabumba drum and triangle. Celebrations are biggest during the June festivals (festas juninas), but on Gonzaga's birthday forró fills stages, squares and dance halls across Brazil. For many people in the Northeast it is a matter of regional pride. The date is fixed and does not follow the Moon. Still, on a clear night in the sertão the sky is dark and crowded with stars, much like the songs about that land.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: an accordion player in a sertão leather hat with its brim turned up in front in a half-moon shape, swaying to a rhythm
