International Women's Day

8 March 2026 — Happy March 8th! Spring arrives with flowers and respect for every woman.

International Women's Day is observed every year on 8 March. Its roots lie in the women's rights movement of the early 20th century, when gatherings and marches in Europe and North America called for equal rights, including the right to vote and fair working conditions. The United Nations began marking 8 March in 1975, International Women's Year. In 1977 the General Assembly adopted a resolution inviting countries to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace, and 8 March became the most widely recognised date. Today the day is marked differently around the world: in many countries it is a public holiday, elsewhere it is an occasion for rallies and discussions about equality. In Bulgaria it is customary to give flowers and greetings to mothers, grandmothers, colleagues and friends. The day is tied to the season rather than to a celestial event: it falls just days before the spring equinox (around 20 March), when day and night are nearly equal and nature awakens. That is why spring flowers are a natural symbol of the occasion.
