International Day of Happiness

20 March 2026 — Smile! Even the stars shine brighter when they are happy.

The International Day of Happiness is observed every year on 20 March. The UN General Assembly proclaimed it in a 2012 resolution. The idea comes from the recognition that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal, and that economic growth alone is not enough: sustainable development, equality and well-being for all matter too. The initiative is linked to Bhutan, known for its concept of “Gross National Happiness” as a measure of progress. Each year the UN suggests a theme, and people around the world organise gatherings, volunteer activities and simple acts of kindness. The date often falls close to the March equinox, around 20–21 March, when day and night are nearly equal and astronomical spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere. That is why the cheerful little sun on Astronativa is no accident: it brings light and a smile to every star it passes.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a smiling little sun drawn from bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
