International Day of Education

24 January 2026 — Hoo-hoo! Every letter is a little star. Let's learn something new!

The International Day of Education is observed on 24 January. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in a resolution adopted in December 2018, and was first celebrated in 2019. Its purpose is to remind us that education is a right of every child and a key to peace, a better future and sustainable development. Each year has its own theme, and UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) helps coordinate the observance. In many countries, schools, libraries and organisations hold open lessons, meetings and campaigns for learning for all, including girls and children in hard-to-reach places. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon or the solstices. Still, it falls in the middle of winter, when nights are long and a clear sky makes a wonderful classroom: since ancient times people have learned to find their way and to keep track of time by the stars.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver owl made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
