International Mother Language Day

21 February 2026 — Hello! In which language do you say „good day“?

International Mother Language Day is observed every year on 21 February. It was proclaimed by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 and was first celebrated in 2000. Its purpose is to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date commemorates 21 February 1952 in Dhaka, when students demanding recognition of the Bengali language lost their lives during protests. The United Nations General Assembly later welcomed the day as well and linked it to the preservation of all languages. According to UNESCO, a considerable share of the world's languages are endangered. That is why schools, libraries and cultural centres hold readings, exhibitions and conversations in native tongues. For Bulgarians, the day is also a moment to remember the Cyrillic alphabet, which was created in the First Bulgarian Empire and spread to many peoples as their script. The day has a fixed date and is not tied to any sky event, but it is a lovely reason to look up and say „good day“ in many languages.
