International Coffee Day
1 October 2026 — One sip of coffee, and a whole galaxy swirls in your cup!
Every year on 1 October, the world raises a cup to coffee. The date is linked to the start of the coffee year in the calendar of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), and in 2015 the day was officially launched at the Expo in Milan. Even earlier, since 1983, Japan had marked it on the same date. According to legend, coffee was discovered in Ethiopia by a goatherd named Kaldi, whose goats grew unusually lively after eating the berries of a coffee shrub. Historical records show that the drink spread from Yemen to the rest of the Arab world and the Ottoman Empire, and from there to Europe. Today the day also reminds us of the millions of people who grow coffee and of fair pay for their work. For night-sky watchers, a cup of coffee is a good companion: warm steam, quiet, and a sky full of stars. And the steam curling above the cup faintly echoes the spiral shape of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a little coffee cup whose rising steam curls into a softly turning spiral galaxy
