International Day of Play

11 June 2026 — Let’s play! My swing reaches all the way to the stars! My swing reaches all the way to the stars!

The International Day of Play is observed on 11 June. It was established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on 25 March 2024, and it was first marked on 11 June 2024. The idea is for the world to recognise that play is an essential part of childhood and of every person's life. Through play, children learn to communicate, to create, to solve problems and to cope with difficulties. Play also supports the health and good mood of adults. The UN encourages governments, schools, families and communities to give every child time and a safe place to play. Because the day is new, it has few established traditions: outdoor games, workshops and shared activities for children and parents are typical. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon, but it falls just days before the June solstice, when evenings are long and bright and playing outside is most enjoyable. And our little hero's swing hangs from the crescent moon because in play and imagination anything is possible – even swinging up to the stars.
