International Day of Forests
21 March 2026 — Trees breathe for us. Take a deep breath too!
The International Day of Forests is observed every year on 21 March. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012, and the first observance took place in 2013. It is coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the UN Forum on Forests. Each year has a new theme about the value of forests and how to protect them.
Forests clean the air, protect water and soil, and are home to a large share of the world's land-based species. On this day people around the world plant trees, go on nature walks, and hold exhibitions and lessons for children. Anyone can join in by planting a tree or simply getting to know the local woodland.
The date falls close to the March equinox (around 20–21 March), when day and night are nearly equal and, in the Northern Hemisphere, nature awakens. That makes the evening sky and the greening forest a fitting pair.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a small oak leaf with a tiny squirrel clinging to it, gliding across the night sky like a kite, with a faint star-dust trail behind it
