International Jazz Day
30 April 2026 — The sax is playing and the notes turn into stars! Catch the rhythm!
International Jazz Day is marked on 30 April. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and is also recognised by the United Nations. The idea came from pianist Herbie Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and its aim is to show how jazz brings people together, supports freedom of expression and encourages dialogue between cultures. Jazz emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the African American communities of New Orleans, USA, and is built on improvisation, that is, music invented in the moment of performance. Each year a host city stages a major gala concert, while around the world there are performances, workshops and school lessons. The date is fixed and does not depend on the lunar calendar. It is also a fine occasion for an evening of stargazing: in late April evenings grow milder in many places, and the free flow of jazz echoes the unhurried drift of the stars.
