International Tea Day
21 May 2026 — Pour yourself a cup! Even the stars love hot tea.
International Tea Day is observed on 21 May. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it in December 2019, and it was first marked in 2020. The initiative came from tea-producing countries and is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Its aim is to draw attention to the importance of tea for millions of smallholder farmers and workers, many of whom live in developing countries. Tea is among the most widely consumed drinks in the world. According to tradition, it was discovered in China thousands of years ago and spread from there across Asia and the globe. Every culture has its own rituals, from the Japanese tea ceremony to British afternoon tea and warm herbal infusions in Bulgaria. The day falls on a fixed calendar date and does not depend on moon phases or solstices, but it is a lovely excuse to raise a cup under the stars and think about where your drink comes from and who grew it.
