International Asteroid Day

30 June 2026 — Hello, Earth! I'm just passing by, waving from afar!

International Asteroid Day is observed every year on 30 June. The date recalls the Tunguska event over Siberia on 30 June 1908, when an object entered the atmosphere and its explosion flattened a vast area of forest in a sparsely populated region. In 2016 the UN General Assembly proclaimed the day to raise awareness of asteroids and of the importance of watching the sky. Asteroids are small rocky bodies left over from the early Solar System, most of which orbit in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists track and catalogue those that pass near Earth so that we know them well and can be prepared. Lectures, telescope observations and online events are held on this day. It is a good reason to look up at the sky and appreciate the work of astronomers.
