Mesir Macunu Festival

21 April 2026 · movable holiday — A sweet starry shower over Manisa – catch your share of luck!

The Mesir Macunu Festival takes place every spring in Manisa, Turkey. According to tradition, in the 16th century the healer Merkez Efendi (Musa Muslihiddin Efendi) created a paste from dozens of spices and herbs that helped the mother of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. In gratitude, the sultan ordered the paste to be distributed to the people. The custom lives on: the sweet paste, wrapped in small paper packets, is thrown to the gathered crowd from the minarets and dome of the Sultan Mosque in Manisa, and many believe it brings health and luck. The festival coincides with the arrival of spring and usually falls around Nowruz, when day and night are nearly equal (close to the spring equinox). The exact dates are announced each year. In 2012 the festival was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Our sky guest is a symbol: a shower of stars falling like little packets from the mosque dome.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation figure made of bright dots and fine lines: the outline of a graceful domed building drifting across the sky, with tiny glowing star-packets falling from it like a gentle shower and fading into sparkles
