St. Martin's Day

11 November 2026 — Light your lanterns – shared light warms the most!

St. Martin's Day is celebrated on 11 November in memory of Saint Martin of Tours, who lived in the 4th century. According to his life story, as a soldier he cut his cloak in two and shared it with a freezing beggar at the gates of Amiens. He later became bishop of Tours. In Germany the day is marked by children's processions with paper lanterns and songs, and in many places a rider plays the saint. Roast goose and sweet pastries are traditional treats. The date follows the church calendar and falls when nights grow long and dark, so lantern light feels especially welcome. On clear mid-November evenings the autumn constellations can be seen, with the Pleiades rising high. The heart of the festival is sharing and kindness.
