Nativity of the Theotokos
21 September 2026 — A candle for peace and a basket of fruit for blessing. Happy feast day!
The Nativity of the Theotokos is a major Christian feast honouring the birth of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The Serbian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, so it keeps the feast on 8 September in church reckoning, which falls on 21 September in the civil (Gregorian) calendar. In Serbia the day is called Mala Gospojina, meaning the Lesser Feast of Our Lady. Believers attend the liturgy, many places hold autumn church fairs known as sabori, and families prepare a festive table. It comes at the start of autumn, and in many places it is an occasion to give thanks for the year’s harvest. It falls close to the autumn equinox, when day and night are nearly equal and the sky begins to trade its summer constellations for autumn ones. A candle and a basket of fruit are symbols of light, gratitude and hope.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a woven basket outlined in soft points of light, heaped with autumn fruits, with a single candle flame glowing on top
