Mothering Sunday

15 March 2026 · movable holiday — A bouquet for Mum, with love and thanks!

Mothering Sunday is observed in the United Kingdom on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Western Easter. In the past, young people working away from home were given the day off to return to their “mother church” – the main church of the area – and often to see their families. This grew into the custom of children bringing their mothers small gifts and spring flowers, such as daffodils and primroses. A traditional treat is simnel cake, a fruit cake with marzipan, decorated with small balls on top. Today it is widely celebrated as Mother’s Day in the UK, although its origin differs from the American holiday of the same name. The date is movable and follows the church calendar: Western Easter falls on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, so Mothering Sunday shifts from year to year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a small bouquet of spring flowers (daffodils and primroses) drifting gently across the night sky
