Longtaitou Festival

20 March 2026 · movable holiday — I'm stretching after my winter sleep! I'm stretching after my winter sleep! Spring is coming – time for a new haircut!

Longtaitou, or „the Dragon Raises Its Head“, falls on the second day of the second month of the Chinese lunar calendar. A folk saying, „On the second of the second, the dragon lifts its head“, marks the arrival of spring: the earth wakes up and farmers hope for rain for their crops. The festival has a real astronomical basis. In traditional Chinese star lore, the Azure Dragon (Qinglong), one of the Four Symbols, rules the eastern sky. In spring the constellation rises in the east at dusk, and in folk imagery the dragon lifts its head after winter. The dragon is also a master of rain and waters. The best-known custom is getting a haircut, believed to bring good luck, especially for children. Families also eat foods with dragon-themed names, such as noodles called „dragon whiskers“. In some places people avoid sewing that day so as not to hurt the dragon's eyes. In 2026 the festival falls on 20 March.
