Leonhardi Ride

6 November 2026 — The horses wear their ribbons – the blessing procession is on its way!

The Leonhardi Ride (German Leonhardiritt; with decorated carts, Leonhardifahrt) is a traditional horse procession held in Bavaria and other parts of southern Germany and Austria. It takes place around 6 November, the feast day of Saint Leonard of Noblac, regarded as a patron of livestock and farmers. Horses and carts decorated with wreaths, flowers and ribbons move solemnly through the village to a church or chapel, where a priest blesses the animals and the people. Best known are the processions in Bad Tölz, held every year on 6 November itself, and in Kreuth, where the tradition is documented as early as 1442. In many places they are held on a Sunday near the feast, so the exact date may shift by a few days. The ride is tied to the end of the farming year, when cattle are brought in for winter and protection is asked for them. In the sky, the festival leads us into late autumn: nights grow long, and over the Northern Hemisphere the autumn constellations are on view, among them Pegasus, the winged horse.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a graceful horse-drawn cart with ribbon-decorated horses, slowly gliding across the night sky in a festive procession
