Lei Day
1 May 2026 — Aloha! Take a wreath of stars and flowers!
Lei Day is celebrated on 1 May in Hawaii. A lei, a garland of flowers, leaves or seeds, is a symbol of hospitality, affection and the spirit of aloha. The idea came from the poet Don Blanding in 1927, and the first celebration took place in Honolulu on 1 May 1928. Over time it became a statewide observance: schools and public spaces host concerts with music and hula, exhibitions and contests for the most beautiful lei. People give lei to loved ones and guests, often with a hug or a kiss on the cheek. In the northern hemisphere 1 May falls in spring, as the Sun climbs ever higher above the horizon. So our garland of stars winds across the night sky like a wreath of light.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a graceful garland of flowers (a Hawaiian lei) drifting in a gentle loop across the night sky
