Lazarus Saturday
4 April 2026 · movable holiday — Health, love and good fortune to every home!
Lazarus Saturday falls on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, eight days before Orthodox Easter. The Church remembers the Gospel story of Lazarus of Bethany being raised from the dead. In Bulgarian folk tradition the day is tied to the custom of lazaruvane. Young girls, called lazarki, put on festive folk costumes, crown their hair with wreaths of spring flowers and walk from house to house through the village. They sing lazarski songs that wish the household health, abundance and good fortune, and wish young people love and a happy marriage. The hosts reward them with eggs, flour or small coins. The custom also marks the girls' coming of age and the awakening of nature in spring. The date moves from year to year because it depends on Easter. Orthodox Easter is set for the first Sunday after the first full moon falling on or after 21 March in the Julian calendar. This full moon is not observed but calculated from old church tables. So Lazarus Saturday is linked, if indirectly, to the rhythm of the Sun and the Moon. In 2026 it falls on 4 April.
