Lazarus Saturday
4 April 2026 · movable holiday — Little Lazarus singer, bringing spring and flowers! Good day and good health!
Lazarus Saturday is observed in the Orthodox world on the Saturday eight days before Easter, on the eve of Palm Sunday. It recalls the raising of Lazarus of Bethany, told in the Gospel of John. In Greece the day is linked to lazarakia (λαζαράκια), small sweet breads shaped like a swaddled figure, often decorated with cloves for eyes and sometimes holding an egg. Housewives bake them on this day. In many places children go from house to house with baskets, flowers and branches, singing Lazarus carols, and receive eggs, small coins and sweets. The custom is close to the Bulgarian lazaruvane, where girls sing for health and fertility. The feast is movable, because it depends on the date of Orthodox Easter, calculated by the Julian calendar: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (21 March, Old Style). So Lazarus Saturday always falls in the heart of spring, when days are already longer than nights.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a little girl in a long skirt and flower wreath, carrying a small basket of spring blossoms and tiny bread figures
